Armor mods can dramatically improve your protective gear. Covert operators can benefit from mods that reduce armor weight and improve stealth; front-line combatants can reinforce armor for maximum protection. No matter how you engage your enemies, the right armor mods can greatly increase your chances of survival.
Pieces belonging to the major armor sets offer far more customization options than simpler garments. Each piece of armor that belongs to one of the major armor sets contains two mod slots—one for material mods and one for miscellaneous mods. However, for those with the proper skills, the Commonwealth contains a wide variety of customizable apparel.
If you plan to craft your own advanced armor mods, consider investing in all available ranks of the Armorer and Science! perks. Of course, the mods you build will also determine the components you need, but nearly all armor mods require some amount of adhesive.
Most armor material mods affect Damage Resistance and Energy Resistance. However, there are a few material mods that include special features. Shadowed mods—which are available for combat, leather, and metal armor pieces—improve stealth in dark areas. The Brotherhood of Steel material mod even improves the Radiation Resistance offered by a piece of combat armor. The headgear associated with major armor sets can accommodate similar material mods.
Miscellaneous mods are linings that further improve armor pieces. BioCommMesh mods increase the duration of chems; pocketed mods increase carrying capacity. Leg armor can be modified to improve sprinting or reduce falling damage. Arm mods can improve blocking or melee damage. Of course, every armor piece can be modified to improve resistances, but you’ll find many more useful effects as you craft or collect new mods. Similar mods are available for miscellaneous armor pieces like DC umpire’s pads and Vault-Tec security armor.
You can attach various headlamps to mining helmets. These handy little mods work similarly to your Pip-Boy’s onboard flashlight.
BALLISTIC WEAVE MODS
Ballistic weave mods reinforce lightweight garments that wouldn’t otherwise offer much protection. You’ll find clothing, outfits, and headgear that can accommodate these special linings. Unlike most mods, ballistic weaves aren’t limited to a single item type. A ballistic weave mod that attaches to a battered fedora can also be placed in a set of farmhand clothes.
